As the whole country is rocked by the current recession, a lot of people are looking at home-based business opportunities as the best alternative today to generate income. Below are five of the top-rated work-at-home jobs that you can easily start in your home.

1) Call center agent

Through powerful software programs that allow your home computer to hook up to your company’s computer system, employers are now able to hire home-based call center agents to provide support to their clients worldwide. While sitting in front of your home computer, you will be answering telephone calls coming from your company’s customers at home and overseas.

If you have a high-end computer, a phone line and a fast broadband connection, then this dream job is for you. The call center agent’s job description varies depending on your employer’s policy. The most common tasks include addressing clients’ inquiries, dealing with client complaint and issues, upselling company products or services, taking the clients’ online orders, or providing technical support.

2) Telemarketing representative

A telemarketer’s job is similar in some ways to a call center agent’s. The work load of a telemarketer involves making cold calls to a company-prepared list of potential customers or leads and directly offering them the company’s products or services. You could also be required to set appointments between clients and the company sales people who will close the sale.

3) General and medical transcriptionist

Online transcriptionists need to listen to recorded audio files and transcribe them from audio into written and printable format. Transcription jobs are split into two categories which are General and Medical. A general transcriptionist’s job involves transcribing audio recordings of various social and business function such as teleseminars, conferences, interviews or lectures.

Medical transcriptionists require intensive specialized training so they can recognize and write down the medical languages used in the audio recordings which were prepared by doctors and other health experts.

4) Web Designer

Web designing jobs pay well if you have the skills. You can work either as a regular employee for a company, or as a freelancer who can accept projects from many different customers. This job would naturally require that you have expert skills in web design, and knowledge in HTML, CSS, PHP, and other computer scripts and languages.

5) Writer

You can choose to work exclusively under one company or as a freelancer for different clients. Writers are in great demand nowadays for different kinds of printed media such as product reviews, web content, press releases, blogging and other web publications. You can cater to offline clients like magazines, or focus specifically on web publications by writing articles on article websites or e-newsletters.

You can anonymously “ghostwrite” for persons who want to publish their own e-books but don’t possess good writing skills. Writers can also increase their online earnings by writing and publishing their own e-books, putting up their own content websites paid for by banner ads, affiliate products and other sponsored links. If you have excellent writing skills, there are endless possibilities for you to make money online.
