How to Avoid Identity Theft

With the kind of technology we have today and the many talented people in terms of using the computer, there is a great possibility that at least one of them will use it in fraudulent activities such as identity theft. The Internet has paved the way for a new way of doing business. Everything is done online: paying bills, sending money to others, even shopping.

Transactions done through the Internet require you to input and submit personal and financial information. Despite claims from companies and sites that promise confidentiality, there is always the risk of identity theft.

Skilled hackers can find out your information and use them for their own benefit. They can steal your name, credit card and bank information-three things that are considered sacred personal information. These are the things you HAVE to keep secret. In case somebody else gets hold of these, they can use them in unlawful activities. They can shop for items using your credit card or get loans from your bank using your identification.

By posing as you, they can easily have access to your finances and use them, without you even knowing it. You’ll only find out about it when you get your credit card statement or when the bank calls to remind you of a late payment. By that time, your bills would be worth thousands of dollars because the identity thief has maximized your plastics.

You can avoid becoming a victim by doing the following:

- Don’t give out information like your name, social security number, birth date, or your mother’s maiden name over the phone or the Internet.

- When you receive emails that you suspect are phishing or spam, don’t click on the links or give out your personal information.

- Don’t throw your credit card or bank statements in the trash because someone can get it and use the information stated there.

- Avoid carrying your Social Security card with you in case you should lose your wallet. You must memorize your social security number and request for a copy of your SS earnings.

- Make sure that the passwords you use on your financial accounts are hard to decipher.

- Request for your credit reports annually to know the status of your finances.

- Cancel any credit cards that you no longer use.

- Check with your creditors on their policy for stolen cards or fraudulently accessed accounts.

Extreme caution is necessary if you want to protect your finances. These tips may not totally keep scammers away but it will surely reduce the chances of you becoming a victim of identity theft.
